The Chihuahua – Large Dog in a Small Package

The Chihuahua is a fun dog that is highly intelligent. Known in recent times as a handbag dog, and often dressed in a variety of cute clothing, it must not be forgotten by besotted owners that the Chihuahua is a dog and has needs as any other.

Tiny and at risk of becoming a yapping dog that guards both his owner and their home this breed of dog should be trained with kind and consistent guidelines in order for him to be at his happiest. The Chihuahua needs sufficient exercise and a good diet to be a healthy and contented canine.

His best traits are unfailing loyalty, devoted friendship and a highly amusing sense of humor. He is also portable and small enough to reside in a place where there would not normally be space for a larger dog.

History

The history of the Chihuahua is uncertain. Most likely is that he originated in Mexico as a small and domestic pet dog though there are many thoughts that this breed of dog began elsewhere. Some of the ideas are as follows;

  • European comforter dogs from the middle ages
  • Malta domestic dogs
  • Spanish pet dogs
  • There is said to have been a letter from Christopher Columbus stating that he found a small dog similar to the ancestor of the Chihuahua in the land that is now Cuba.

The Mexican origins are the most widely believed.

The Techichi

The Techichi was a small, long haired and mute dog that occupied Mexico for several centuries. This breed of dog is said to be an ancestor of today’s Chihuahua. Images of this dog have been found in stone carvings from the 9th century and even as far back as the 5th century. Artifacts from all over the world have also been discovered that bear images of a dog not dissimilar to the Chihuahua.

During the 12th Century when the Aztecs arrived in Mexico they are said to have bought with them a small hairless dog that originated from China. This little dog and the Techichi are believed by some to have been cross bred that ultimately produced the first dog type who was to, eventually many generations later, become a Chihuahua.

It is said that the Aztec people had differing views on the small canines. The rich and clergy were reported to believe that the small dogs were sacred and often they took part in religious ceremonies. Belief is that the poor people often saw them as food and had no use for them other than this so they ate the little dogs.

Legend

When the Aztecs were conquered by Cortez it seemed that the small dogs were lost altogether. Around this time remains of dogs close to the size and shape of the Chihuahua were found in graves in many areas of Mexico. These discoveries included unlikely places such as in human graves with their masters and even in an Emperors palace. Legend states that popular belief was that the small dogs could guide their masters through the spirit world and protect their souls after death.

In 1850 several small dogs were found near ruins in the area of Chihuahua which is where the little dog gets its name. The breed remained rare until the early 1900’s when they gained a boost in popularity and became more sought after as pets, they were also registered by the American kennel club in 1904.
In the 1960s the popularity of the Chihuahua reached a peak and continued to gradually rise. This resulted in the dog being a common and much loved breed in both America and the United Kingdom.
