Scenic Drives Throughout America

One of the things that makes the U.S. so amazing is the spectacular scenery to be found throughout the land. From glittering ocean views to stunning canyon sights, there is something to appeal to any traveler. A great way to see much of this natural beauty is taking it all in while participating in one of the great American traditions – the road trip.

There are a number of routes throughout the country, known specifically as scenic drives. Some include spots of historic interest, while others showcase the breath-taking beauty of Mother Nature. Some routes are bare of any towns, while others are complemented by small towns and villages that are attractions in their own right. No matter where in the country you want to go, you are bound to find a scenic route that is a destination of its own.

Mountain Views

The United States is home to a number of mountain ranges that produce some stunning vistas. From the Great Smokey Mountains to the Rockies, you can find beautiful views, heart-pounding thrills, and national parks that are always worth a visit.

Many mountain drives are particularly popular during the autumn season as the trees put on a spectacular show of color. Mountains become kaleidoscopes as each tree adds its own pop of color, from vivid yellows to velvety plums. There are many routes throughout New England that are popular trips for locals and tourists alike. There are six states that make up New England, and nearby New York has its own share of scenic views, such as the Lake George region, so there’s plenty from which to choose. If you want impressive mountain views, New Hampshire’s Mt. Washington Auto Road will take you to the highest peak in the region. If covered bridges are more your speed, Vermont’s Bennington County offers some picturesque structures.

Another east coast favorite is the Blue Ridge Parkway that takes you through the Great Smokey Mountains in North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. Dogwoods, firs, and a variety of trees cover the mountains that are often draped in low-lying clouds, giving them their smoky name. But there’s always plenty to see throughout the year, with waterfalls, wildflowers, and colorful foliage.

Go West

The western states have their own vistas that are bound to make a lifelong impression. From the Grand Canyon to the Turquoise Trail, there are views and attractions to entice the whole family. Utah’s Patchwork Parkway is a two-hour drive through amazing canyons, lakes, forests and lava fields, ensuring a constant source of visual interest. Colorado’s San Juan Skyway features waterfalls and wildflowers, but is also home to ancient Native American pueblos and a variety of outdoor activities.

From June to early fall, Montana’s Going-to-the-Sun Road is a trip not to be missed. Cutting through Glacier National Park, the drive takes you past forests, alpine tundra, glacial lakes, and actual glaciers. You can even cross the Continental Divide.

History buffs may be interested in heading to Oregon and the Columbia River Highway. The route was the first scenic highway in America and follows the last leg of the journey by Lewis and Clark. Drivers aren’t the only ones to enjoy this area. There are plenty of hiking trails and there are even dedicated stretches for cyclists.

Coastal Cruising

If you want to visit some beaches as part of your scenic drive, there are plenty of coastal drives to suit your needs. California’s famous Pacific Coast Highway is a must-see. On one side you have ocean views and sparkling beaches, while on the other side you can take in the view of towering redwood trees.

On the other side of the country, Florida is full of great views and beaches full of the whitest sand. A truly unique drive can get you all the way to Key West, the southernmost point in the U.S. The Overseas Highway connects the mainland of Florida to the many islands that make up the Florida Keys. Thanks to a series of roads and bridges, you can take in an amazing sea view that covers 113 miles.

There are many more scenic routes to explore, with each state having its own bit of natural splendor to show off. Whether you’re driving coast to coast or just want to see the sights in one state, you’re sure to find a route that is worth the trip.
